Overview

This lesson plan is split into 2 x 1 hour sessions. Students will be introduced to the 3D scan to 3D print process by creating a range of classroom objects from clay. The creations will then be turned into digital models using a 3D scanner before being 3D printed! Enrolling in the lesson will give you complete access to the teacher training material and lesson documents. This includes content to help you prepare and deliver the lesson along with design tutorials so you become familiar with the process prior to teaching it in the classroom.

Subject Areas

The lesson can be incorporated into the study of design technology, art and design and ICT. The material can be adapted for ages 8-15. The curriculum is aligned to NGSS, CCSS and UK National Curriculum standards. A comprehensive list of standards met is included in the lesson platform.

Learning Criteria

In this lesson students will:
- develop contextual knowledge of 3D scanning
- improve their mastery of art and design skills using a range of materials
- analyse and evaluate their own designs, and that of others, in order to determine whether they meet the criteria required for 3D scanning and 3D printing
- develop hands-on 3D scanning skills
- use 3D printing software to edit and prepare files
- develop an understanding of 3D printers and how they operate
- go through the product design process, from concept to completion

Equipment List

Each student will require:
200-300g of air-drying white modelling clay (modelling tools optional)
1 x laptop preloaded with 3D printing software (students can work in pairs if required)
1 x pen/pencil
1 x ruler

The teacher will require:
1 x screen for presentation
1 x desktop 3D scanner (http://weareprintlab.com/products)
1 x 3D printer and PLA filament (http://weareprintlab.com/products)
1 x laptop/computer preloaded with 3D scanning software and 3D printing software
1 x ready-made clay model to run a 3D scanning demonstration (e.g. doorstop)

*Parts of the lesson content show instructions on how to use EinStart-C 3D printer and the EinScan-SE 3D scanner. However the lesson can be adapted for use with other 3D printers and 3D scanners* For more information on the recommended products, visit http://weareprintlab.com/products
