Overview

In this 1 hour lesson you will introduce your students to the basic principles of 3D printing, how it works and how it can be used in various industries. The lesson involves a presentation about 3D printing, physical demonstrations and a teamwork activity where students pitch 3D printing business ideas in groups. Enrolling in the lesson will give you complete access to the teacher training material and lesson documents. This includes content to help you prepare and deliver the lesson along with design tutorials so you become familiar with the process prior to teaching it in the classroom.


Subject Areas

The lesson lasts approximately 1 hour and can be incorporated into all STEAM subjects . The material can be adapted for ages 7-15.


Learning Criteria

In this lesson students will:
- develop contextual knowledge of the 3D printing industry
- understand the basic principles of how 3D printers work
- learn about 3D printing software settings
- learn about the principles of designing models for 3D printing
- collaboratively pitch a 3D printing business idea


Equipment List

1 x 3D printer and PLA filament (http://weareprintlab.com/products)
1 x laptop/computer preloaded with slicing software for your 3D printer
1 x screen for presentation
7 x 3D printed demonstration models (see lesson preparation section)
1 x clear jar or box filled with water (minimum volume 11x11x11cm)
